An Operating System is the software that communicates with the hardware of a computer and works as the intermediary between apps and the hardware, which includes peripherals such as a printer, a mouse or a keyboard. When you run an application, it sends requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the interaction is done through a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to a personal computer, web hosting servers also feature an Operating System which acts as a host for all of the software installed on them, including script apps or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, etc. A virtual machine can be generated on a physical one, so it is possible to install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast to the physical server host Operating System.
Multiple OS in VPS
We offer as many as three different Linux distributions for the Operating System of our virtual private servers - Debian, CentOS and Ubuntu. These are some of the safest and the most reliable OSs available and we provide all 3 rather than just 1 because we realize that you might want to set up some software which has specific requirements with regards to the Operating System it will run on. The latter is because each of the three Operating Systems has a huge support community behind it and there are different software applications you could install on the web server. Your OS selection will also determine exactly what hosting Control Panel can be installed on the VPS in case you wish to use one and that's why we offer several Control Panels as well. If you ever decide that you want a different OS, our tech support team can quickly wipe the present one and set up the one that you want. We also offer an optional service to have the OS on your VPS updated weekly.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
In case you decide to obtain one of our dedicated servers, you will find three Operating Systems on the order page because we want to give you a wider choice with regard to the system environment on the machine as different applications could have certain requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian come with different modules developed by their large support communities, so you can select any of these OSs and benefit from a reliable and safe web hosting service. Depending on your selection, you'll also have different Control Panels to choose from. Of course, we can always change the Operating System if the one you have selected initially doesn't meet the requirements of the software that you would like to run. We can also update the OS routinely to keep it as secure as possible through our Managed Services upgrade package.
